I'm gutted. Angry. Disappointed.
Austria is recently pushing digital signatures, which is a good thing imo. The EasyBank, my financial instition, is helping the push by refunding the cost for a bank card with digital signature ability, a card reader and a certificate. As I'm always wanting to be at the forefront of the digital revolution, I ordered such a card, and made an appointment with the bank to register a certificate. All I needed was my new bank card and an "Amtliches Lichtbildausweis" (government-issued identity document with photograph). So far so good.
I grabbed my Belgian ID Card (which is a government-issued identity document with photograph and has the same validity as a passport in the European Union) and went to the bank. They said "we're terribly sorry, but the a-trust program we use to create certificates accepts only Austrian Driving Licences and international Passports". So I didn't get my certificate - my Belgian ID Card was not acceptable, and neither was my Belgian Driving Licence.
So how was that again with the equality of all EU citizens in all EU countries?
Angrily yours,
Dirk
