  • Adobe Actobat 7

No idea how old this news it, but I stumbled on it by accident: Adobe have release version 7 of their Acrobat line of products.  Here's how to get it.

  • Kellar's Keep played through!

My girlfriend Tatjana and I finished playing Kellar's Keep yesterday.  Next we'll tackle Return of the Witch Lord, but we'll change some of the rules since I think the game is too easy.

  • Kenneth Branagh's Hamlet

The first version of Hamlet I saw was Kenneth Branagh's movie.  At first the 2 hour version, a couple of weeks later the 4 hour version.  I was blown away.  Ever since I started buying DVDs a couple of years ago, I wanted to have one of this great movie.  No luck so far - until now, that is: http://www.kenbranagh.com/ reports that the movie will be released on dvd in 2006.

Sounds good.  One more reason to hope that 2006 comes soon ...

  • Discrimination of EU Citizens in Austria

    I'm gutted.  Angry.  Disappointed.

Austria is recently pushing digital signatures, which is a good thing imo.  The EasyBank, my financial instition, is helping the push by refunding the cost for a bank card with digital signature ability, a card reader and a certificate.  As I'm always wanting to be at the forefront of the digital revolution, I ordered such a card, and made an appointment with the bank to register a certificate.  All I needed was my new bank card and an "Amtliches Lichtbildausweis" (government-issued identity document with photograph).  So far so good.

I grabbed my Belgian ID Card (which is a government-issued identity document with photograph and has the same validity as a passport in the European Union) and went to the bank.  They said "we're terribly sorry, but the a-trust program we use to create certificates accepts only Austrian Driving Licences and international Passports".  So I didn't get my certificate - my Belgian ID Card was not acceptable, and neither was my Belgian Driving Licence.

So how was that again with the equality of all EU citizens in all EU countries?

    Angrily yours,

    Dirk

  • Star Wars : Dark Nest I : Joiner King revealed

The official Star Wars web site has a short news item about the upcoming novel Joiner King, the first book in the Dark Nest trilogy.  I'm sure the story will not be quite as dramatic as the synopsis wants us to believe (my favorite gripe about the New Jedi Order) but the cover looks, well, very alien.

Needless to say, I preordered my copy on Amazon some months ago ;-)

  • Blade Runner : Special Edition

Blade Runner: the mother of all cyberpunk, dark future and product placement movies.  One of those classics which, even if you never watch it, you ought to have at least standing on your dvd shelf ;-).  Anyway, there's a "Special Edition" in the works.  Not to be confused with the 1992 Director's Cut, the Special Edition will feature a better transfer, better sound, and (more) changes by Ridley Scott.  BRMovie.com tells us that the project is currently on hold.
  • Small Gods

For a refreshing, cynical view on religions and holy writings, be sure to check out Terry Pratchett's Discworld novel Small Gods (ISBN 0552138908). Previous knowledge of the Discworld series is not required, since the book's chronological place is about 100 years before the first Discworld novel.
  • Let's get metaphysical

"Let's get Metaphysical" is the title of an instrumental piece on David Gilmour's solo record About Face.  I like instrumental music, so I play this piece every now and then.  Makes a good name for a blog category, I'd say.
  • Pink Floyd: Pulse

I guess everybody knows Pink Floyd.  If you don't, I'd say that getting to know Pink Floyd is an excellent opportunity for getting to know some good music.

Pink Floyd released a double live cd of their Division Bell tour called "Pulse".  Or "p.u.l.s.e" for the purists.  It was a groundbreaking albums in terms of sound quality on a live album, and I have since compared every other live album's sound quality to the benchmark set by Pulse.  Now the really frustrating thing is that there is no DVD version of Pulse.  There was a VHS and a VCD of it, but no DVD.  Fans have been waiting for a Pulse DVD for years.  I think it was somewhere during 2004 that news emerged that Pink Floyd were working on a DVD version.  The release was set for December 2004, then March 2005, and now it has been pushed back again to "the middle of 2005", according to Brain Damage.

I will believe this when I have the dvd in my hands, and my guess is that'll be roundabout December 2005.  In time for the xmas shopping boom ...
