  • Honeymoon

Tomorrow Tatjana and I will be leaving for Madeira, we're going on our honeymoon!  I hope we'll have lots of fun, make many photographs and that nothing happens in the world so I won't have such a hard time catching up.

  • Michael Schumacher announces his impending retirment

I didn't want to believe it, even though all self-proclaimed experts said that Schumacher would retire.  I did believe it when I saw Schumi's face at the press conference, and his words only confirmed what I then knew, deep down.  I feel short of shocked.  Schumi's been in Formula 1 for so long, it's difficult to image the pinnacle of motor sport without him. Räikönnen will have a lot to live up to, but I think he'll do fine.

Updated 2006.09.10: Ferrari race drivers confirmed.

  • A perfect Schumacher race

The race was decided after the first pit stop: Schumacher came in while in the lead, and they fueled his car and fueled his car and fueled his car until there was just enough time to emerge from the pit in front of Räikönnen.  Alonso's fate whoever gave this predictable race an unexpected twist.  Only two points between the two contenders for the title, and only three races left.

Winner of the day: Michael Schumacher, for obvious reasons.

Loser of the day: Fernando Alonso, for obvious reasons.

  • The state of MVC

The other day, a nice fellow named Sam emailed me with regard to my blog post The Model, the View, and the ... Other one, one of my more popular blog posts that will soon celebrate its first anniversary. Sam asked me if I had learned more since then.  I answered him, and then I though "why not write a blog entry about it?"  So here goes (italic is taken from my answer to Sam).

Unfortunately, I didn't get to work on those topics quite as much as I wanted to. Several things distracted me, like organizing my wedding, completely unrelated projects at work, studying to become MCSD, and so on.

What I did find/learn in the meantime:

There's also a very interesting article about the command pattern in Windows Presentation Foundation by Jelle Druyts on the Microsoft Benelux site.

I'm listing John Gossmann's posts about Model-View-ModelView here for easy reference:

  • The mystery of coffee machines

It never ceases to amaze me just how much people are apparently willing to spend on a coffee machine.  Several hundred Euros is very common.  I'll admit that a network-connectable coffee machine is a nice enough thing, but 1000 EUR is simple an order of magnitude more than what I find reasonable. In the last year or so, coffee machines in the price range of 60 - 150 EUR have become fashionable as well, like the Nespresso, the Senseo and the like.

Recently, Braun introduced the Tassimo.  It enters the "trendy home coffee machines" market with an introductory price of 149 EUR.  A bit on the high side for a home coffee machine, but it is able to make coffee, hot chocolate and tea.  But here's the catch: a single cappucino costs 50 Cent!  And this is just crazy.  My 7.99 EUR coffee machine (really!) makes a mug of coffee that costs me 11 Cent (apart from water and electricity).  The Senseo, which I am sort of considering to buy, makes a cappucino for 15 Cent.

This really begs the question: what where Braun thinking when they set those prices?  They have a machine that costs twice the price of a Senseo, and a cappucino costs more than three times that of a Senseo's.  This is plain bad commercial thinking IMO.

  • Tatjana starts blogging

My wife Tatjana started blogging.  She took a LiveJournal account, you can find it here.  There's also an RSS feed for the lazy among us (looking around guiltily).  I don't think she should have gone into such deep details about my bedside habits, though ;-)

  • Life itself is one of my values

Mark Steyn writes about how the western world deals with their values. How we stand up for those values, or fail to do so.

I'm not sure I understand what he means, though.  He seems to be saying that the people from the western world are weaklings because we would convert to another religion (say, Islam) just to save our life.  And in doing so, we would diminish our values and our culture.

I can only speak for myself, but one of my values is Life itself. So I can't see how dying for my religion would help my values.  To me, there are very few things worth dying for, and religion is certainly not one of them.  I'll gladly convert to another religion if it means I "get to leave jail for free".  Oh, and by the way, isn't the god of Islam the god who spoke to Abraham?  And isn't the god of Christianity that same god who spoke to Abraham?

Maybe this attitude makes me look weak and unworthy in the eyes of some other people.  Well, isn't that just too bad?  I do have my ideals, and maybe I'm not doing enough for them.  But the thing is, I just don't know how much (if anything at all) I can do for my ideals when I'm in the Undiscovered Country that comes after death.  Faced with the choice between "doing a small amount of work for my ideals while being alive" and "doing an unknown amount of work for my ideals and appear strong in the eyes of some other people while being dead", I choose Life.

  • My Ideal .NET 2.0 Developer box

This is a description of my ideal developer's computer:

    • Pentium 4 3GHz or better
    • 1 Gb RAM or better
    • Windows 2003 R2 Standard Edition
    • Office 2003
    • Visual Studio 2005 Team Suite
    • CodeSmith 3.2
    • CodeRush / Refactor Pro
    • SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition

No, I don't have all that software - this is an ideal list, not an actual one.

  • Belgium and the Netherlands are considering the organization of the world cup soccer 2018

According to this article (Dutch) on the website of the Royal Belgium Football Association, the Belgian and Dutch soccer associations are considering posting a joint candidacy for the world cup soccer in 2018.  Their joint organization of the european soccer championship in 2000 was a success, so why not go for the world championship?
